Toll roads in the Czech Republic: what do you need to know?
The practice of toll roads is not new to the European Union, but each country has its own rules and features, and the Czech Republic is no exception. You must always have a particular electronic road vignette that allows you to drive on them, which must be paid for the required time. Using our company's car rental services, you can get a prepaid vignette for the necessary time and use the car for trips between cities.
All central roads in the country are considered motorways and marked with a corresponding sign.
What is a particular vignette for Czech toll roads?
To drive by car on all toll roads in all Republic territory, you must pay for travel and get a special device. It is called elektronická dálniční známka or an electronic vignette. It confirms that you have paid for travel on the toll road and can travel on it for a certain time. Payment for travel is made for the time of travel but not for the distance.
The next categories of road users are necessary to pay for travel:
-
Passenger big vehicles only up to 3.5 tons;
-
Trucks over 3.5 tons.
However, motorcycles are not required to pay for travel by car in the Czech Republic. Motor vehicles can travel on such special roads for free.
Who is not required to use vignettes?
Czech legislation provides several exceptions that allow you to travel on toll roads for free. We have already mentioned one above—motorcycles. However, that is not all.
Passenger big vehicles up to 3.5 tons used for different humanitarian purposes can travel completely free of charge on Czech motorways. The car drivers must have some documents confirming the purpose of the trip.
Where can vignettes be sold?
Vignettes for car drivers are sold in several places. They can be purchased at the post office, gas stations, or special self-service vehicles. Places where devices are sold are marked with a necessary sign. It is also possible to buy vignettes online.
The cost of vignettes is constantly changing. You can get up-to-date data on the official webpage or at points of sale. There are three types of vignettes by validity period:
-
D – for ten calendar days;
-
M – for thirty calendar days;
-
R – valid only from December 1 of the previous year right to January 31 of the next year.
You can also choose the device's start date and postpone it for up to 3 months. When purchasing, indicate the start date along with the vehicle's state registration plate. You can also get a discount if your car runs on special gas or also biomethane.
In our company, you can rent a car in Prague for a trip to any other city in the Czech Republic. Including you can use the motorways. All vehicles are equipped with vignettes and have the right to enter toll roads, so you do not have to spend additional funds.
Knowing these rules and conditions for driving on Czech roads, you will never get into a difficult situation and will not pay fines.
